When I shared my 2021 reading report, I made a commitment that I will not only be reading books, but I will be writing them. It looks I am on course to meet my target of at least one book contribution, every year, for the next five years. Thereafter we up the game. I am truly truly indebted to the great people who hold my hand every day and encourage me to write.
And today, I celebrate Prof. Tim Murithi . A great scholar, teacher and peace practitioner, the co-author and editor of our latest book, ‘African Union and Transitional Justice: Healing the Past and Restoring Human Dignity.’ I contributed two Chapters. In Chapter 6, I discuss the transitional justice journey here in Zimbabwe, the movement building efforts I led with the Zimbabwe Human Rights N.G.O Forum leading to the establishment of the National Transitional Justice Working Group – Zimbabwe. In this Chapter, the main theme that I pursue is the importance of civic leadership in catalysing transitional justice.
“The role of civil society in Zimbabwe’s efforts to deal with the legacy of its past highlights the importance of early engagement with societal actors in the process to ensure that the design and expertise is secured to lay the foundations for implementing transitional justice processes.”
In Chapter 12, I speak about the role of young people in transitional justice processes. This contribution reflects my own bias that society must tap into the energy and creativity that young people bring to the table.
“Since time immemorial, young people have been at the centre of historic transformation processes, including the armed struggle in Southern Africa.”
This chapter argues that the legacy of young people leading transformations provides a solid foundation for young people to lead transitional justice processes in Southern Africa.
It was such a joy and privilege to work on this initiative with brilliant Africans from all over the continent.
Thanks Prof Tim Murithi and the entire team at the Institute of Justice and Reconciliation (Cape Town) for bringing this to life.
