Only a truly independent commission can lead credible truth-telling process on Gukurahundi

ZimRights has called for an independent commission to lead truth-telling on Gukurahundi. Speaking in a live interview with Newzroom Africa, ZimRights National Director Dzikamai Bere said traditional leaders, due to their clearly pronounced political allegiance cannot lead a credible truth-telling process on the Gukurahundi atrocities. Bere was responding to the launch of the Gukurahundi hearings by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Bulawayo on Sunday 14 July 2024.

Bere said in principle, the people of Zimbabwe spoke out through the 2013 Constitution and affirmed that matters of national healing must be led by an independent commission.

What we are going to have in the chief’s led

process is pseudo-transitional justice. We are going to go through choreographed motions of truth-telling that have no authentic and real participation of the victims. Bere said.
